The Self-Assembler
While there has been plenty of hype about the idea that a nanorobotic assembler might be able to selectively move atoms and molecules into place and even make copies of itself, a far more promising approach to bottom-up nanotechnology is what I call a self-assembler.

Molecular Nanotechnology
Entry in the Encyclopedia Nanotech, "A term coined by Drexler refering to technology resulting from the ability to thoroughly and inexpensively control matter on the molecular level."

Center for Responsible Nanotechnology (CRN)
"The Center for Responsible Nanotechnology is a non-profit think tank concerned with the major societal and environmental implications of advanced nanotechnology. CRN promotes public awareness and education, and the crafting and implementation of effective policy to maximize benefits and reduce dangers."

What is Molecular Manufacturing?
A description of Molecular manufacturing from the Foresight Institute, "As its name implies, molecular manufacturing will be achieved when we are able to build things from the molecule up, and we will be able to rearrange matter with atomic precision..."

Molecular Engineering
An article by Eric Drexler published in PNAS that views biochemistry from the perspective of a mechanical engineer and proposes protein design as a pathway to molecular manufacturing.
