In biological systems, the duplication of DNA is known as replication. This normally takes place duruing the S phase of the cell cycle. DNA replication can also be carried out synthetically by means of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Since each generation of the PCR roughly doubles the number of copies of the DNA, the method results in exponential amplification of the genetic material.
