Definition: A part of a molecule that undergoes changes in its electronic properties.
The term "redox" originates from a combination of the terms "reduction" and "oxidation". Reduction refers to lowering of the charge of the system by one elementary charge (i.e. addition of one electron), while oxidation refers to the oposite (increase by one elemenatry charge or loss of an electron).
