Surface Tension

Definition: The force acting on a liquid-gas interface resulting in thin film on the surface.
Surface tension can be quantified as the force acting normal to the interface per unit length of the film at equilibrium which also equals the surface energy (the energy required to increase the surface area of the liquid by a unit amount). This force tends to minimize the area of the surface, thus explaining why drops and bubbles are round.
