Branched polymers are critical components of biomolecular nanotechnology - for instance starch and glycogen. Synthetic chemists have found methods to create highly branched synthetic polymers by iterative chemical reactions (with each iteration being referred to as a "generation"). Such polymers are of a fractal nature, containing a maximum 2D surface area within a minimum 3D space.
